Singer Island, Florida January 2008
Saturday 1/19
It never fails. For the last 3 years we have struggled to make our trip south to fish, only to be hijacked by the weather. This year we thought we had tricked mother nature by getting out our winter weather earlier in the week only to have our planned reservations disrupted. We found out that the second leg of our trip from Atlanta to West Palm was cancelled because of bad weather in Atlanta. Never fear. We got here by taking matters into our own hands but it was worth it. We arrived around 12:30a to 83 degrees and beautiful sunny skies. Charlie wasted no time in changing into his shorts and taking off with Capt. King and our mate John in some sound fishing. 2 beautiful speckled trout, some nice pompano and a couple of Spanish later, Charlie could not wait to call everybody he knew in near freezing temperatures to spread his joy. Good Job Charlie!
Big Jim and Jester Jeff headed into town for dinner supplies and we are now working on some beautiful filets for dinner. The forecast for Sunday is for temps in the mid 60's and a little windy but that will not deter the Jester Crew for going out to hunt for sails and whatever else is ready to be caught! South Florida is the life. We'll update tomorrow with pictures of all of the action.
Sunday 1/20
Sunday was blow day in West Palm Beach but with reports of a Sail Bite, The Jester crew left the dock at 7:30a and had bagged two nice Sails by 9:00a. There were a handful of other brave souls that left the inlet but not many. The bite was over early and we headed back to the house around 12:00 noon.
We fished with Google Eyes that we purchased from one of the live bait boats at the bridge before heading out the inlet. This bait is extremely hearty and will continue to swim with gusto as long as they are in the water. We saw several Sails leisurely checking out our baits but they were very nervous and most continued on their way. We fished about 2 miles and drifted about 4 miles north of the inlet. Several boats flew Bob Lewis Kites with similar success but I can tell you they had to have their hands full today. The Jester dropped both outriggers and hovered with 4 baits, 2 long and 2 short. We had several runs on Mackerel that tore up our baits and kept us busy with our gear. We had one shark on and saw a huge turtle that appeared to be chasing our boat.
With windy weather forecast again for Monday, we have decided to leave a day early for Bimini to travel with the clouds and play with the sun. We'll update from Bimini on all of our fun and on our trip over. Great day and cool for South Florida, but it is a heck of a lot warmer down here than it is back home.
Monday 1/21
One nice thing about South Florida fishing is that there is generally always an opportunity to fish. The weather changed our plans for travel to Bimini today because of the wind but even through the wind and rain today, the Jester Crew still did some inshore fishing and bagged several nice fish. Big Jim and Jeff nailed several nice Snook and one beautiful drum on the second shift, while Big Mike caught Snook and Jack this morning. Weather forcast is for more rain tomorrow but less wind so we are back to our original plans for travel to Bimini, Bahamas tomorrow. Weather forecasts for the rest of the week promise warmer temps and sunny skies so, even with all of the sucessful fishing so far, we are just getting started.
Last night Big Jim and Effie hosted a lovely cocktail party with friends and family from the area. Tonight's menu is a variety of fish from previous catches and left overs that Jester Jeff's sweet sister brought to the party last night. We shove off tomorrow morning around 10:00a and should be in Bimini in 2 or 3 hours. Our accomodations have promised internet service in the Bahamas so we will continue to update with pictures and tails of our trip.
Stay tuned for updates on the rest of the week with more pictures!
